Overcoming complexity and enabling seamless clinical workflows

The challenge was to integrate multiple advanced medical systems into a unified digital OR environment, enabling centralized visualization, seamless interoperability and streamlined workflow management. The hospital wanted to improve clinical coordination, provide real-time access to data and support recording and live streaming for educational and medical purposes, while ensuring high safety standards and uninterrupted daily operations. The project required careful planning and customization to ensure compatibility between heterogeneous systems, minimize disruption to clinical workflows and ensure successful implementation by multidisciplinary teams.

A customized digital OR integration that combines visualization, control and real-time communication

The solution includes a customized integration of the EIZO CuratOR digital OR platform, including EX3242-3D 4K surgical monitors for high-resolution 3D visualization and an SP2-24T-494K Surgical Panel with touch functionality for central control, patient data access and PACS display. In addition, the full CuratOR Caliop software license was implemented to support video management, documentation and PACS connectivity.

The project resulted in a fully integrated and digitally optimized OR environment that enables centralized visualization, efficient workflow management and seamless access to clinical data. Surgeons benefit from high-resolution imaging and real-time control of all visual sources directly in the sterile field, while the OR team works in a coordinated and ergonomic environment with reduced cognitive load.

The system also enabled the first live streaming of an open surgical procedure from a Greek public hospital with real-time bidirectional communication and a connection between the operating room and the Athens Concert Hall during the 23rd ENT Conference. This milestone supports interactive education, collaboration and knowledge sharing beyond the hospital setting.

The OR team quickly got used to the new system and emphasized its intuitive operation, reliability and the considerable added value it offers for daily clinical practice, training and multidisciplinary communication.

Unlocking the clinical, operational and educational value of the digital OR

The implementation of the digital operating room brings significant benefits in all clinical, operational and educational areas. Centralized visualization and integrated system control improve situational awareness and support more efficient intraoperative decision making, while the cognitive burden of managing multiple independent systems has been reduced.

Seamless interoperability between medical devices and hospital information systems ensures immediate access to critical patient data and imaging, enabling more informed and timely clinical interventions. At the same time, the integration of recording and live streaming capabilities transformed the operating room into a dynamic environment for education, training and knowledge sharing that extends beyond the hospital walls.

From an operational perspective, the solution optimizes workflow efficiency through its user-friendly and ergonomic design and supports improved coordination between multidisciplinary teams, while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.

Conclusion

A future-proof digital OR that sets new standards for surgical excellence

Our goal was to create a digital operating room for the hospital where the surgeon has immediate access to the patient's medical examinations and is able to both record and live stream the procedure, enabling online training. These capabilities help to ensure the best possible conditions for the patient while supporting the more effective expansion of medical knowledge.
