Monitor developed specifically for digital pathology workflows

EIZO Corporation, Japan, has announced the launch of the PX3150. This 30.5-inch medical monitor features a resolution of 8 megapixels (4096 x 2160 pixels), offering a larger display area than conventional 4K monitors (3840 x 2160), and was developed specifically for digital histopathology. The PX3150 is designed to support the growing adoption of digital pathology and address the need for reliable visual assessment in diagnostic practice.

As digital pathology becomes an integral part of routine diagnostics, laboratories must manage a growing caseload while dealing with increasing diagnostic complexity. As pathology workflows are increasingly digitized through the scanning of tissue sections for microscopic evaluation – known as Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) – pathologists now rely on digital images as the primary basis for their assessments. This shift makes consistency and reproducibility in visual presentation essential. The PX3150 is EIZO’s first monitor developed specifically for digital pathology. It was designed to meet the high standards of precision and quality assurance in this rapidly evolving medical field.

To ensure precise color reproduction right from the start, every PX3150 monitor is individually calibrated at the EIZO factory. The color space and gamma are precisely calibrated so that the sRGB color space is accurately reproduced, providing a reliable visual reference for the evaluation of digitized histopathological specimens created using WSI.

Since a monitor’s display characteristics gradually change over time, regular recalibration is essential to ensure consistent quality over the long term. The sensor integrated into the monitor frame (IFS) enables color accuracy checks and calibrations without the need for an external sensor. Using the scheduling function of EIZO’s RadiCS quality assurance software, routine quality checks can be performed automatically outside of operating hours – for example, overnight – enabling continuous quality management without interrupting daily clinical operations.

The PX3150 has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a digital pathology display and meets Class A requirements under the European In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (IVDR), the EU legal framework for medical devices used in clinical laboratory testing. By meeting these international standards, the monitor provides an extremely reliable display environment specifically designed for pathological diagnostic applications.

As part of EIZO’s commitment to sustainability, the monitor’s housing is made from 70% recycled plastic. The packaging uses molded pulp made from recycled cardboard and newsprint instead of conventional recycled Styrofoam or plastic, and the cables are packaged in paper rather than plastic bags. These measures help reduce environmental impact and promote the responsible use of resources.

As digital pathology becomes increasingly established in routine clinical practice, visual consistency is becoming more and more important. The PX3150 supports this shift by providing a stable visual foundation for pathological diagnosis in digital diagnostic environments.
