Challenge

The Central Hospital of Katerini in Greece needed to standardize its existing surgical and imaging systems to improve visualization, streamline workflows, and ensure easier access to clinical information. The goal was to improve team coordination and documentation through seamless interoperability and an intuitive user experience.

Solution

An EIZO CuratOR OR solution was implemented, comprising 4K surgical monitors, a surgical panel, and Caliop software for video management, signal routing, and documentation. Additional components, such as a video grabber, streaming tools, and an audio system, enable recording, live streaming, and real-time communication—all integrated into a scalable, future-proof platform.

Result

The fully integrated operating room now consolidates all imaging and data sources, leading to more efficient workflows and improved collaboration. Surgeons benefit from excellent visualization and faster access to information, while hospital staff report easier use, better organization of information, and seamless collaboration. The system supports reliable daily operations and strengthens digital documentation processes.

This project would not have been possible without the significant contribution of Mr. Vakalikos, the former notary of Katerini. His generous donation made it possible to establish the first digital operating room in the Pieria region and the first in a public hospital in northern Greece, thereby significantly improving the quality of healthcare services for the local population.
Mr. Vakalikos dedicated the new operating room to the memory of his parents, Georgios and Afroditi, and his sister Erasmia.

Streamlined workflows and improved surgical coordination

The goal was to integrate the existing surgical equipment and imaging systems into a unified digital operating room environment that enables centralized visualization, efficient workflow management, and improved access to clinical information. The Katerini Central Hospital sought to improve coordination among surgical teams, reduce complexity during procedures, and introduce recording and documentation capabilities, all while maintaining uninterrupted clinical operations. The project required seamless interoperability between heterogeneous systems and intuitive usability to ensure smooth adoption by all users.

Comprehensive Implementation of a Digital Operating Room at Katerini Central Hospital

The project involved the implementation of an EIZO CuratOR operating room solution, including the EX3242 4K surgical monitors for high-resolution display, the Surgical Panel SP2-24-494K (flush-mounted) for central control and display management, and the Caliop software for video management, signal routing, documentation, and central system control.

The setup also includes a video capture device for recording, a streamer for live broadcasting, and an audio system (microphone and speakers) to support real-time communication and teleconferencing.

The integrated solution enables:

  • Flexible management of signals from medical devices and their transmission to surgical monitors
  • Direct connection to the radiology department (PACS) for retrieving preoperative patient images
  • Recording of surgical procedures using the video grabber
  • Live streaming of multiple video sources for educational and medical purposes
  • Capabilities for teleconferencing between the surgical team and external participants
  • Scalability for future integration and expansion to additional operating rooms within the hospital

All components are integrated into a unified system that ensures centralized control, seamless signal distribution, and reliable operation in the surgical environment.

Improved Efficiency and Clinical Benefits Through a Unified Digital Operating Room

The implementation delivers measurable added value by simplifying complex workflows and improving overall efficiency in the operating room. Centralized control of imaging and data reduces cognitive load and allows physicians to focus more on the procedure itself.

Improved interoperability ensures seamless access to patient information and imaging, thereby supporting faster and more informed decision-making. At the same time, the recording and documentation features contribute to improved training, knowledge sharing, and quality assurance.

The system's intuitive design promotes rapid user adoption, while its modular architecture ensures future scalability and the long-term sustainability of the investment.
